Woodworm
"Woodworm" refers to the larval stage of several wood-boring beetle species. Correct identification matters, since not every exit hole means an active, ongoing problem.
Active vs. historic infestation
Exit holes in timber are evidence that woodworm was present at some point, but they don't necessarily mean the infestation is still active. Fresh, pale-coloured wood dust (frass) near a hole is a stronger sign of recent or ongoing activity than old, dark holes with no surrounding dust. Damp, poorly ventilated timber is generally more attractive to wood-boring insects, which is another reason woodworm and damp assessments often go together.
Common signs to look out for
Small, round exit holes in timber surfaces
Fine, powdery wood dust (frass) around or below holes
Crumbly timber edges or a weakened feel when pressed
Adult beetles seen in spring or early summer, near timber
Tunnelling visible where timber has been cut or exposed
Damp or poorly ventilated timber, which is more attractive to infestation
