Tracing damp above the ceiling line
Unlike wall damp, a ceiling stain usually means something above it needs attention: a damaged roof covering, defective flashing, a leaking pipe, or a poorly insulated loft hatch creating a cold spot that condensation forms on. Because the source is usually hidden from view, tracing it accurately matters more here than almost anywhere else in the property.
Common signs to look out for
A brown or yellow-tinged stain, often ring-shaped
Staining that grows after rain, suggesting an active roof leak
A damp patch directly below a bathroom, loft hatch or roof valley
