Cavity Wall Insulation Removal

Cavity wall insulation can bridge the cavity or trap moisture where it isn't suited to the property, and when that happens, damp penetration often follows.

When cavity insulation becomes a damp problem

Cavity walls are designed with an air gap that helps keep moisture from reaching the inner leaf. Insulation installed into an unsuitable property: one in a high-exposure location, with a narrow cavity, or with existing masonry defects: can bridge that gap or hold moisture against the inner wall, leading to penetrating damp that wasn't present before the insulation went in.

Common signs to look out for

Damp patches appearing on internal walls after insulation was installed

Damp worsening specifically in exposed, wind-driven-rain conditions

Cold spots combined with damp staining

A property in a high-exposure location with cavity fill insulation

Damp identified during a pre-purchase survey linked to cavity insulation

A history of damp complaints since insulation was installed

How We Help

Our assessment and removal process

Removal is only recommended once the insulation is confirmed as a genuine contributing factor.

  • Moisture readings and inspection to confirm the insulation is contributing to the damp
  • A borescope inspection of the cavity where appropriate
  • Careful removal of the insulation material from the cavity
  • Making good and advice on suitable alternative insulation approaches, if any

What our customers say

“Good service. Turned up when they said they would, found the issue and explained it without loads of jargon. Work was tidy and the lads were decent. Can't ask for much more really.”

Paul · Knaresborough

“An altogether professional service. The survey was detailed and the gentleman carrying it out was clearly experienced with older properties. He also pointed out a couple of maintenance items that were contributing to the issue but didn't require any work from DAMPCORE.”

Graham · Bishopthorpe, York

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if cavity insulation is causing my damp?
A survey involving moisture readings and, where needed, a borescope inspection of the cavity is the reliable way to confirm this rather than assume it.
Can the cavity be re-insulated afterwards?
Sometimes, with a different, more suitable approach, but that depends on the property's exposure and construction, and is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
