Damp Walls
A damp wall can be caused by rising damp, penetrating damp or condensation, and, in older solid-wall properties, sometimes more than one at once.
Why 'damp wall' isn't a diagnosis on its own
Walls are where most damp problems become visible, but the wall itself is rarely the cause: it's where the moisture, whatever its source, ends up showing. An external solid wall can be affected by penetrating damp from failed pointing, rising damp from a failed DPC, or condensation from a cold internal surface, and each needs a different fix.
Common signs to look out for
Staining, discolouration or a visible tide-mark
Crumbling plaster or blown, hollow-sounding areas when tapped
Cold-to-the-touch patches, particularly on external walls
Mould growth in corners or along skirting level
Wallpaper lifting or paint bubbling
A musty smell near the affected wall
